Pediatric gastroenterology is a medical subspecialty that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and management of gastrointestinal (GI), liver, and nutritional disorders in infants, children, and adolescents. These disorders may affect any part of the digestive system — from the mouth to the anus — as well as associated organs like the liver, pancreas, and gallbladder.
Children’s digestive systems are still developing, and gastrointestinal symptoms in children often differ from those in adults. Paediatric gastroenterologists are specially trained to address conditions such as feeding difficulties, chronic abdominal pain, constipation, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), liver diseases, malabsorption syndromes, and nutritional deficiencies.
